What's the Difference Between Grade A, B, and C Jade? | OGA Natural Jadeite Guaranteed

Jade has been treasured for centuries as one of the most precious gemstones in the world. Yet, with the growing market demand, jade quality now varies greatly — and terms like Grade A, B, C Jade often leave new collectors confused.

This guide will help you understand the characteristics of natural jadeite (Grade A jade), how to verify authenticity through professional certification, and how to protect the long-term value of your jade investment.

What Is Jadeite? How Is It Different from Quartz?

Jadeite is a rare form of natural jade that forms deep within the Earth under extreme heat and pressure over millions of years. The finest jadeite is found mainly in Myanmar (Burma) and appears in a wide range of natural colors — not only the classic green, but also shades of yellow, white, lavender, red, grey, and even near-transparent hues.

High-grade “ice type jadeite” is especially rare and prized for its clarity and brilliance. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation of nature — silky in texture, rich in tone, and beautifully luminous with a soft, subtle sheen.

Quartz, on the other hand, belongs to the broader silicate (stone) family. It is more common, often clear or evenly colored, and lighter in weight.

Here’s how to tell them apart at a glance:

  • Jadeite (natural jade): Heavier weight, smooth with a subtle luster. When tapped, it produces a clear, delightful sound.

  • Quartz (crystal): Lighter weight, very smooth and transparent, with a crisp, glass-like sound when struck.

Because of its rarity and natural formation, natural jadeite has long been considered one of the most sought-after materials in the jewelry market. Unlike quartz, which is widely available, natural jadeite carries both aesthetic and investment value.

A, B, or C Jade — Can You Tell by Eye? How to Verify Authenticity?

Jadeite is categorized into three main grades based on processing and chemical treatment:

  • Grade A Jade (Authentic / Natural Jadeite):
100% natural and untreated. No chemical bleaching or polymer filling. Highest quality and value.

  • Grade B Jade (Bleached & Impregnated Jade):
Chemically treated with strong acid and resin to improve appearance, but structurally fragile and easily discolored.

  • Grade C Jade (Color-Enhanced Jade):
Artificially dyed to enhance color. Cheap, unstable, and prone to fading or cracking.

  • Grade B+C Jade:
Both filled and dyed — often looks overly bright and unnatural, regarded as low-quality imitation jade.

To the untrained eye, Grade B Jade may appear similar to natural Grade A Jade, but its internal structure and long-term durability differ greatly. Many beginners are misled into buying treated or dyed jade at inflated prices.

That’s why obtaining a professional authenticity certificate is the most reliable way to confirm the jade’s origin and treatment status.
